Re: Midnight Magic
Tue, June 27, 2006 - 4:36 PM"Besides his terrific con man story and persistence, at this time he had a limo picking him up as an illustration of how rich he was -- probably a friend who drove it for a local hotel and was in cahoots with the scam. When he found out I worked in films he came to my room and played a tape of himself in performance (or what was reputed to be him) singing in a bad Sinatra way. He actually left collatoral for my final $20 "loan" (the second of two "loans") to him -- one of his sharkskin suits and his radio. I never did get the $40 back and was a damn pissed that I let myself be conned (I knew from the get go that was a real possiblitity), but in retrospect, the experience of the con, the guy sweating in his Sinatra suit, the straw pork-pie hat, the time he spent working his story and the limo picking him up, was almost worth the price of admission." -

Re: Midnight Magic
Sat, October 6, 2007 - 7:26 PMHe got to me too a few months back right outside of the Omni hotel on the night of my 5 year anniversary with my boyfriend. Told me his story about how he was an eccentric rich man who made sandwiches for the poor. He claimed that a movie was written based on his life and that it was being filmed that very night, starring Robin Williams (who he chose himself). It was the first time he'd asked anyone for help but his car was stuck in the garage and he needed cab money to get home. In return, I would receive a million dollars at a coffee shop the very next day. The catch was that I would have to give half to my favorite charity. He then proceeded to sing us some of his "famous" renditions of Sinatra songs. I didn't really believe him, but his story was so crazy I thought it just might be true. He made off with $20 of my money. The next day I looked him up online and found several others that had been scammed by him. It was almost worth it for the story though, it does make a fun conversation piece. -

If you could kindly give me your credit card number, expiration date, and the little code on the back, I promise I will give you $10,000. Sure, it's not $1 million, but I don't have quite as much money as that guy. You see, my funds are tied up in a Nigerian bank at the moment, but I promise that my money is good and I'll even sing you a Buck Owens song if you'd like..... -

Re: Midnight Magic
Thu, February 12, 2009 - 7:27 AMAnd he's still at it... I'm visiting this week, and he got me yesterday on the corner of Kearney and (something? -- near a Jamba Juice just north of Market). No shiny suit or Sinatra, but he was dragging a wheeled suitcase and gave me a story about coming down from Calistoga and leaving his phone and wallet at home. When I told him I couldn't help him, he said he's given away millions and I would've been next... I told him I could sleep with myself very welll at night, thanks.
But yeah, the movie with Robin Williams (and Billy Crystal, and Danny Glover) had just finished shooting yesterday.
This is why I travel. -

Re: Midnight Magic
Mon, February 23, 2009 - 10:38 AMHahaha. I just meet him at Peet's Coffee in the Ferry Building. He gave me the same story. I knew instantly he was full of shit. But who am I to judge so after urging him to "get to the point." I told him I would certainly give him $40 bucks to get his car out but I really did not want anything back and if he had money to give away then he should keep giving it to people who needed it. He even tried to give me his umbrella but I already had one so I said he should keep it. He then walked me to work signing Sinatra (I thought he was good!) and telling me a string of hilarious dirty jokes. He makes a more honest living then most of the people that work down town. Good on you, Midnight Magic :) Best $40 bucks I’ve spent in a while.

Re: Midnight Magic
Mon, March 30, 2009 - 11:41 PMyeah so I'm drawing in Union Square and this guy comes up with two dell boxes on a dolly. He complimented my art, and we started a convo. He goes onto tell me that Spielberg, Lucas, and Burton are making a movie about him, starring Robin Williams in the lead role as him, Midnight Magic. He kept trying to make me feel that it was fate that he saw me and talked to me because now I had a chance to be in the movie. I'm a big enough movie buff to know that those 3 directors could never work together and Billy Crystal hasn't been in a movie in like 8 years (that's prob how long he's been telling this same scam story). He kept going on and on about how he's famous for helping people and that's why they're making a movie about him, for all the humanitarian work he's done. And now, "it's so weird" cause he needed my help. "This is hard" he kept saying as he built up the timid tension to ask me to help him because he left his wallet and id at home and he needed money to get his car out of the parking structure and get across the bridge. "If you cover the balance I'll meet you back here tomorrow and pay you back, and you can star opposite Robin Williams in this movie." I told him I can't help him and he was persistent. I had to tell him several times. He told me if I walked with him to his car he could prove to me that everything he said was true. When he got upset that he had told me all this in vain he kept saying something like "the boss will get you, I could prove it's true." That's when I told him the movie wasn't real, "yes it is" he said and shuffled off, mumbling to himself. -

Re: Midnight Magic
Mon, July 6, 2009 - 4:53 PMI met this man today and like everyone I am pissed that I fell for a scam. But after saying that he was the best sales person I have ever met. The story was the same as most people have heard, but the kicker with my experience was that I gave him $13 and he claimed it was unlucky and that he needs $27. He then started singing me songs and telling me jokes and insisted that I go to an ATM to get more money. After telling me a few dirty jokes and singing the unofficial Castro theme song he wrote I gave him $20. I will forever tell people this story and wont be showing up tomorrow to recieve the million dollars he promised me... -

Re: Midnight Magic
Fri, August 21, 2009 - 5:03 PMAnother update on that "newly completed" movie, with Danny Glover as Mayor Willie Brown, Billy Crystal as somebody, and Robin Williams as Mr. Magic himself, aka "Alan Freed, Jr.." I was probably the easiest pushover, as he only fed me the stuff about humanitarian altruism and his self-importance. This made the top spot on Google for Midnight Magic though. I'm only going to go down to the spot where it happened at 2PM next Monday to have a smoke again!

Re: Midnight Magic
Thu, October 29, 2009 - 3:32 PMI met Midnight Magic last night. He was pretending to use the payphone outside of a grocery store on Mason and Bush. When I walked by he asked how I was doing and I said, "fine, how are you" He then asked me if I had ever seen him in my life. When I said no, he gave me the whole Midnight Magic helping the homeless story. When I cut him off and said I had to go, he told me I had my guard way up and needed to relax. I said, I was sorry and couldn't help him. He told me, I sure was sorry. I went inside and bought my pizza and when I went back out he started telling me that someday I was going to need help and no one would be there for me. I wished him a goodnight and he mumbled some more stuff to me.
When I got home, he stuck in my mind. I wondered if I should have given him some money. He did use the same $27 reference and showed me that he had some fives and ones on him. Maybe I should have been nicer. Well, I looked him up online and I found out his real story. He wasn't as charming to me as the stories in the other posts. He just seemed more bitter. He's very persistent and good at pushing buttons. Even now, part of me thinks I should have just given this poor guy a dollar. He may be a con artist, but he's still struggling. -

Re: Midnight Magic
Mon, November 2, 2009 - 5:31 PMAll I can say is look out for this man people of SF! I just met him today and heard the same story about the movie being made based on his life story with Robin Williams, Danny Glover, etc. While I consider myself to be fairly intelligent, this man reeled me in with the manner in which he spoke and how articulate he appeared to be.
I have to laugh after reading the similar stories above and must look at the money I gave him as payment for his con show and a generous gesture on my part toward humanity... no matter how depraved a man "Midnight Magic" may be.

Re: Midnight Magic
Wed, November 4, 2009 - 8:52 PMOh that con man, just the other day he approached me, and thanks to this thread, I was ready. He said asked how I was and I kicked in with a crazy tale.
Something about my father is in hospital, I flew in from Washington & my luggage was stolen. Money transfer doesn't come in until tomorrow and I needed money for hotel for 1 night. Tomorrow, when the wire is cleared in my account, I could meet him and give him 10x what he gave me.
He was shocked. just mumbled "stay strong, god bless" ish and rolled his luggage away.
kinda hard to ask me for $ when he has his bags, and I don't have mine.
Ha
heehee
whoo
I'm in no position to help anyone financially. I wish I were though.
