"The coldest winter I ever spent was a summer in San Francisco''

Often attributed to Samuel Clemens. But apparently, there isn't any real evidence of him ever having said this.

Anybody know where it really comes from? Or how long it has been attributed to Mr. Clemens?

  • people often attribute witty remarks to mark twain. as if he was the only curmudgeon around.

from sfgate: "The coldest winter I ever spent was a summer in San Francisco,'' a saying that is almost a San Francisco cliche, turns out to be an invention of unknown origin, the coolest thing Mark Twain never said.

i actualy heard it was oscar wilde who said this, but there doesn;t seem to be any proof of that, either.

Well, having grown up in just south of the City, I could well say, "The coldest winter I ever spent was a summer in Pacifica." Man, it was cold and windy. Also, the coldest and windiest trip to the beach was the standard jaunt to Coyote Point. I have not so fond memories of eating sandwiches laced with sand. :(
