Often attributed to Samuel Clemens. But apparently, there isn't any real evidence of him ever having said this.
Anybody know where it really comes from? Or how long it has been attributed to Mr. Clemens?

Re: "The coldest winter I ever spent was a summer in San Francisco''
Fri, December 16, 2005 - 12:39 PMpeople often attribute witty remarks to mark twain. as if he was the only curmudgeon around.
from sfgate: "The coldest winter I ever spent was a summer in San Francisco,'' a saying that is almost a San Francisco cliche, turns out to be an invention of unknown origin, the coolest thing Mark Twain never said.
i actualy heard it was oscar wilde who said this, but there doesn;t seem to be any proof of that, either.

Re: "The coldest winter I ever spent was a summer in San Francisco''
Fri, December 16, 2005 - 1:02 PMWilde had the great quote "It is an odd thing, but every one who disappears is said to be seen at San Francisco. It must be a delightful city, and possess all the attractions of the next world."

Re: "The coldest winter I ever spent was a summer in San Francisco''
Fri, December 16, 2005 - 1:14 PMI said that way back in the summer of '75. People confuse me with Mark Twain all the time. And when I went to Oakland and saw that my house had been torn town and realized that I couldn't go home again, I said, "There's no there there."
Then just the other day I said, "The fog crept in on little cat feet..." but I couldn't figure out how to finish it.

THE fog comes
on little cat feet.
It sits looking
over harbor and city
on silent haunches
and then moves on.

Re: "The coldest winter I ever spent was a summer in San Francisco''
Sat, December 17, 2005 - 10:04 AMWell...both Samuel Clemens and Oscar Wilde came through San Francisco - so whether or not either one said it, it is certainly possible they both experienced it. -

Re: "The coldest winter I ever spent was a summer in San Francisco''
Sat, December 17, 2005 - 10:05 PMI'm a native San Fr'ciscan (probably one of the few in this tribe) and for a summer interned at a local paper. One hot day I shot pictures at an A's game at the Oakland Coliseum; even got slightly burned by the sun. Hours later I shot a Giants night game at Candlestick Park, and nearly froze in the dark chilly night, it was so cold. That was a very bizarre day for me weatherwise. -

I live in San Bruno now, but still work on Walnu Creek. I go through weather shock every winter (cool<>freeze) and summer (cool<>hell). I love this weather. Its great in the summer to escape the "hell" heat and return to a cool
place.

Re: "The coldest winter I ever spent was a summer in San Francisco''
Tue, January 24, 2006 - 1:12 PMWell, having grown up in just south of the City, I could well say, "The coldest winter I ever spent was a summer in Pacifica." Man, it was cold and windy. Also, the coldest and windiest trip to the beach was the standard jaunt to Coyote Point. I have not so fond memories of eating sandwiches laced with sand. :( -

Re: "The coldest winter I ever spent was a summer in San Francisco''
Tue, January 24, 2006 - 4:25 PMThe beauty of the weather on the coast is that you can wear all your fashions. Pity the poor people in LA who must dress in T-shirts and cut-offs all the time. Went to a leather bar there once and the guys were sweating up a storm in their leather. They looked miserable. No problem here, tho.

Re: "The coldest winter I ever spent was a summer in San Francisco''
Tue, August 18, 2009 - 12:24 PMJack London is actually the one who made this quote. He was born and raised in San Francisco.
I do not know how long or how it became attributed to Samuel Clemens, but my husband and I heard it attributed to him this morning on TV and both questioned it as we knew it was Jack London. -
