Outer Mission

So let's hear it... anyone at all familiar with the area of San Francisco lovingly referred to as the Outer Mission? It almost sounds like the hinterlands, doesn't it? Yet there are so many neighborhoods that fall into this non-descript sector.

I grew up in Mission Terrace which was this section of clay-tile roofed homes between Alemany Blvd. and San Jose Avenue. If you crossed to the east side of Alemany (or went through the stinky, scary tunnel underneath the street), you were now in the one-block transitional zone until you reached Mission Street. At that point, you were in the Excelsior. The vague boundaries of the Excelsior were Peru on the north, Mission on the west, Prague on the east, and France on the south. Cross over France to the south and then you were in Crocker Amazon. Just south of Geneva, you began moving up to Southern Hills. East of Crocker Amazon Park and you moved into Visitation Valley.

So... anyone know what the area south of Geneva but west of Mission was called? How about the area around Balboa Park? Did I forget any other neighborhood names?

Hey... is Joe's Fish Grotto still there?

Joes Fish Grotto was there the last time I looked, but with new owners. I used to love going there with my grandparents, who almost every time ran into friends from high school (Balboa and Mission...) They are long gone now, but I have fond memories of Joes, and their sole.

My family was from around that area- my Great-grandmother raised her 5 daughters on Farragut, off Alemany, and my Grandfather once owned a gas station where the freeway overpass now is. In 1906 that area was safe, and although the family visited cousins in Oakland for a while, the house on Farragut survived. It's still there, greatly remodeled, but a cousin sold it in the 1970's.

I don't know if the area has a name, but I'll ask my mom.

Wikipedia says Cayuga Terrace -- en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neig...er_Mission

No mention of Mission Terrace, and I never heard of it growing up in the Outer Mission/SF side of the Top of the Hill.

I just took a visit out to my old neighborhood today--Geneva Terrace off of Geneva (near Scherwin and Velasco Streets). I lived in the Eichler homes from 1966-1975, and I hadn't driven by the old homestead in over 20 years.

The neighborhood has changed some--no more Eichler Towers and there is a wonderful park in front of my old house on Kelloch Ave where the vacant lot used to be. My old elementary school, Visitacion Valley, looked pretty good, too.
